The BIP Workshop is conceived as a continuation of a series of workshops on the theme of bunkers, previously organized as follows: Plan Baron: The Future of Super-Resistant Structures (Portugal, 2022); Caserma Druso: Workshop on Dissonant Heritage (Italy, 2023); and Underground Reinvention: Cold War Repositories of Tito’s Bunkers (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2024).
The fourth part of the series, scheduled for Poland in 2025, will focus on 20th-century fortification systems, including World War II and post-war bunkers located in Gdańsk and its surrounding region. It will take the form of a survey, co-design and creative workshop. The workshop, titled Architecture of War, draws its name directly from the work by Keith and Arvid Ottar Mallory, serving as both inspiration and quotation.
Following several experimental phases focused on conceptual and design exploration, this final stage will address a real-world intervention at a broader urban scale. The project will be based on a case study of the fortification system on the Westerplatte Peninsula. The workshop is planned in close collaboration with the Westerplatte branch of the Museum of the Second World War and will seek to address the question: How can a design intervention enhance the museum’s mission and foster public engagement?
The BIP programme will be strictly contacted with ongoing research project HORIZON-MSCA-SE-2023 “HEPHAESTUS – HEritage Protocols for ArcHitecturAl European croSs-bordering siTes evalUationS” activities and will include participation of the project members (young researchers and PhD students) aiming to link research and didactic and involve students into research activities.
